Unions condemn 'damaging' education proposal

The Joint Teaching Associations on the Island say they can't support the decision of the Council of Ministers to centralise the Human Resources section of the Department of Education and Children.

A statement, signed by ATL Isle of Man branch secretary Andrew Shipley, NASUWT branch secretary Russell Miller and organising secretary of the NUT Karl Flint, calls it a damaging move which will result in an increase in avoidable confrontational incidents.

It's also felt the change would be 'cost ineffective' in the long run.

The Joint Teaching Associations are also concerned about plans to limit pay for supply teachers from next year, to an extent which, they say, would represent an effective pay cut for members.
