Cycling: TLI Championships return to the Island

Three races taking place across today and tomorrow (12-13 Sept)

A busy weekend of cycling action awaits on the Isle of Man with the return of the TLI National Championships.

Having last run on Manx shores in 2022, the event will see three races in two days held on a mix of open and closed roads today and tomorrow (12-13 September).

Organised by the Manx Viking Wheelers Cycle Club, the meeting is expected to feature in the region of 160 riders from on and off-Island across both junior and senior level.

Chairman of Isle of Man Cycling, Rob Sorby, says it's exciting that the event is making a return and that a lot of effort has gone into making sure it can happen:

The first two races of the meeting will take place today (12 September) in the St Mark's region, first with a time trial on open, public roads before a road race on closed highways in the afternoon.

The Time Trial will get underway from 9am and will see riders cover an 8.29-mile course on the A26 between the area of Braaid Crossroads and the outskirts of Ballasalla.

Roads will remain open during that event.

After that, a road race will take place in the afternoon with the course to shut between 12.30pm and no later than 4.30pm

The highways to shut for the road race are as follows:

• A26 St Marks Road at a point between Lower Stuggadhoo and Mount View to the B35 Foxdale Road
• B37 Rheligh Road (Red Lion Hill) from the A26 St Marks Road to A24 Foxdale Road 
• A24 Foxdale Road from a point just west of Braaid Hall to the B35 Garth Road
• B35 Garth Road from the Garth Crossroads to the B36 Tosaby Road
• B35 Foxdale Road from the B35 Garth Road to the A26 Braaid Road

Then, tomorrow (13 September) will be a town centre criterium race in the heart of Douglas with roads on the circuit in the city centre to shut from 8am until no later than 2pm.

As a result, road closures will be in effect on Lord Street between Market Hill and Bank Hill; Athol Street between Lord Street and Church Street; Church Street between Athol Street and John Street; Barrack Street between Church Street and Lord Street; North Quay and Market Hill whilst highways are shut.
