Cricket: Island player smashes long-standing international record

Joanne Hicks helped IoM to finish runners-up at Continental Cup

An Isle of Man cricket player has smashed an international record which had stood for nearly 100 years.

Joanne Hicks became the first ever player over the age of 50 to take a five-wicket haul in an international match during the Isle of Man's Continental Cup tie against Greece on Thursday, 27 August.

Furthermore, 51-year-old Hicks' achievement also sees her become the oldest ever international player to take five wickets.

The previous record in that regard had been held by Australia's Bert Ironmonger who was 49 years old when he took two 'fifers' in a test against South Africa in 1932.

Meanwhile, Hicks helped guide the Isle of Man to finish runners-up at this year's Continental Cup competition in Romania after the Manx squad lost out to Turkey in the final on Saturday, 30 August.

Despite missing out on the silverware, Isle of Man player, Lucy Barnett was named as tournament MVP having racked up 257 runs and four wickets across the event.

More generally, the Isle of Man side featured six players who went on to make international debuts at the Continental Cup.
