MHK concerned about 'fake news' over Castletown square

Change won't come for some time, says Moorhouse

An MHK says Castletown residents needn’t be alarmed over plans to pedestrianise the town’s square.

Arbory Castletown and Malew member Jason Moorhouse is concerned that ‘fake news’ has spread following Castletown Commissioners’ decision to take parking out of the centre.

In July, the local authority voted to permanently pedestrianise the area, and the matter is now in the hands of the Department of Infrastructure.

In a post on social media Mr Moorhouse says the process has been ‘set in motion’ but residents won’t see any change for some time, and will be able to share their thoughts on the proposal.

After meeting with the commissioners, he’s highlighted more blue badge parking, an increase in short stay parking, and an increase in free parking spaces elsewhere in the town as reasons to support the local authority’s plan.

Mr Moorhouse believes the concern over a loss of parking is a ‘perception problem’, but can see issues with a pedestrianised square through the winter months.
