Salvation Army marking Debt Awareness Week
A charity on the Isle of Man which provides support to people struggling with debt says it’s seen a marked increase in the scale of the problem.
Today (16 March) marks the start of Debt Awareness Week.
In 2024 the Salvation Army helped 193 clients who had combined arrears of £364,000; this year, up to the start of March, that total has risen to £2.2 million.
Debbie White is the area debt advice co-ordinator – she spoke to Chanelle Sukhoo alongside debt advisors Wes Taylor and Paul de Weerd:
The Salvation Army provides impartial, confidential, not-for-profit debt advice that is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
It has a 'judgement free' approach to debt and runs courses on money management and budgeting, which offer support on things like negotiating with creditors and drawing up payment plans.
