John Wannenburgh says the prison and hospital could use more local produce
An MHK who called for action to get more Manx produce into supermarkets wants to see government using local food and drink in its own facilities.
Douglas North member John Wannenburgh's motion was amended by the minister responsible for food, committing government to support Island-based producers through the food security plan.
While Mr Wannenburgh welcomed the move, he highlighted government's 'purchasing power' within its own services.
He believes the hospital and prison are among the facilities that could be using more Manx food and drink:
The Department of Health and Social Care says Noble’s Hospital uses 100% Manx fresh milk, cheddar cheese and ice cream, and sources fresh beef, pork, lamb and cooked hams locally when stock allows.
Other non-local items are bought through Manx-registered wholesalers, meaning around 98% of the hospital’s catering and services spend remains on the Island.
Manx Radio has also invited the Department of Home Affairs to respond.
