An investigation is underway after 'substantial' damage was caused by a large fire at Castletown & Malew Fire and Ambulance station.
Two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries as crews from other stations and Ronaldsway assisted with the incident.
Beginning at around 5pm on Thursday (13 August) evening, an alarm in the building alerted a member of staff who discovered a fire in the main appliance room.
While crews battled the fire, the main road between Ballasalla and Castletown was closed for just over an hour in both directions as thick smoke poured across the area that could be seen for miles around.
At the height of the incident, nine fire appliances were on the scene, including a turntable ladder and a specialist appliance from the Airport Fire and Rescue Service, along with several support vehicles and officers.
A spokesperson said that substantial damage has been caused to part of the building and that the 'cause of the fire remains under investigation'.
Chief Fire Officer Mark Christian has reassured the public in the Castletown and Malew area that fire cover within their local area was maintained at all times throughout this incident, and will continue to be maintained in the coming days and weeks.
Fire cover offered to the Airport FRS will also continue to be maintained.
