Peel win women's FA Cup

First trophy in team's 17-year history

Peel AFC were the winners of the fourteenth Regency Travel-sponsored Women’s FA Cup, after defeating holders Corinthians 3-2 in the final at the Bowl on Sunday.

Maxine Smalley scored for the westerners after only three minutes with Sarah Wignall doubling their lead shortly after the interval.

Corinthians’ captain Anna Dillon pulled a goal back to make it 2-1, however, Becky Corkish headed home Peel’s third, thus restoring their two-goal advantage.

Jade Burden did reduce the arrears for the Whites but they couldn’t muster an equaliser in the closing stages.

Peel, founder members of women’s football back in the 1999/00 season, have won their first ever major trophy, thus ending a 17-year wait for silverware.
