Athletics: Island athletes shine at British Masters

Seven-strong team claims 11 medals in Derby

Isle of Man athletes have secured multiple medals during this year's British Masters Track & Field Championships.

The seven-strong Island squad managed to claim 11 medals at the meeting in Derby held from Friday, 11 September to Sunday, 13 September.

The standout Manx performance came courtesy of Fiona Whitehead who collected medals in all five throwing events she contested.

Meanwhile, there were two medals each for Ewelina Hand and Daniel Stewart-Clague whilst Sarah Halligan and Tom Riley managed one medal each.

Taking part in the Women's 55 age group, Whitehead's three gold medals came in the discus, hammer and weight throw whilst she also took silver in the javelin and a bronze in the shot put.

Elsewhere, Hand was taking on the Women's 40 category competitions and claimed two silver medals - the first coming in the 400m hurdles and the second in triple jump.

Matching that standard was Stewart-Clague who also brings him double-silver with his successes coming across the 100m and 200m races in the Men's 35 age class.

Also among the podium finishes, Halligan took silver in the 400m race in the Women's 45 age class whilst Riley managed gold in the only event he contested - the 100m race in the Men's 40 age category.

Outside the medals, Kevin Deakes just missed out one a top-three finish, coming home fourth in the Men's 65 age group 5,000m race whilst Robert Young came ninth in the same age bracket in the discus.
