Victorian prison a distant memory

The Isle of Man's prison at Jurby became operational a year ago today.

On August 14, 2008, 90 prisoners were transported under police escort from the old jail in Victoria Road, Douglas.

After many years of debate, which included discussion on whether the old prison site could be redeveloped, the purpose built facility was constructed in the far north of the Island, at a cost of £41.7 million.

Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw says the prison at Jurby represents a massive step forward for the Isle of Man, in terms of what can be delivered from a custodial facility.
