'Suspicious items' disposed of in safe and controlled manner

Investigations underway following discovery at airport

Further investigations will take place after suspicious items were discovered by contractors working at the Isle of Man Airport.

Derbyhaven Road was closed on Friday following the discovery, and the items disposed of in a safe and controlled manner by a specialist UK team on Saturday.

The Isle of Man Constabulary says it's suspected that the items were a type of phosphorous device left undiscovered for many decades, probably going back as far as the 1940s.

Two contractors who had close exposure to the items attended Noble's Hospital for precautionary check-ups, but were discharged on the same day.

The area remained secured overnight, with a number of residents evacuated and access to some businesses restricted, but flights were unaffected.

Further investigations have now been launched involving the contractors, Department of Infrastructure and health and safety officers.
