Reinstatement of home births 'remains at top of agenda' for Manx Care

Chief Exec insists the situation is 'improving'

Homebirths remain unavailable as a viable option for pregnant women on the Isle of Man.

The service was suspended by Manx Care several years ago due to staffing pressures.

In 2023, an ombudsman report found the failure to give pregnant women the option of a home birth was a breach of the Manx health authority's legal obligations.

Speaking on Manx Radio's Mannin Line, Chief Executive Teresa Cope says the board recognises that there are mothers on the Island that want the option; but argues they need to ensure safe, sustainable and consistent staffing levels in the Jane Crookall Maternity Unit to provide it.

However, she insists the situation is 'improving'.
