Committee proposal fails
Proposed abortion reforms in the Isle of Man have passed a significant hurdle.
After years of what Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson described as Island laws 'turning a blind eye to the plight of women, new measures have received their second reading in the House of Keys, with unanimous support.
They include allowing women a termination up to 14 weeks, and up to 24 weeks if there are serious health concerns or social grounds why a birth shouldn't go ahead.
There'll be a chance for further debate, when a number of amendments are expected to be tabled, at the clauses stage in a fortnight's time.
An attempt by East Douglas MHK Chris Robertshaw to form a committee to further investigate issues surrounding the proposed reforms has failed, with 5 votes for, and 18 against.
The debate has now ended.
