'Proof of Manx Development Corporation will be in the pudding'

Organisation faces questions at Manx Legion Club

The managing director of the Manx Development Corporation says the organisation will show its worth once ongoing projects are completed.

The company, which was created to help regenerate brownfield sites on the Island, is currently redeveloping the former nurses' home in Douglas and undertaking the Westmoreland Village scheme.

A number of properties in the area have been bought up by the MDC to facilitate the developments.

Representatives answered questions at the Liberal Vannin Party's monthly meeting at the Manx Legion Club last night during what was, at times, a heated debate. 

Speaking to Manx Radio beforehand, Dane Harrop says he can understand why people will be sceptical at this point in time:

"It might make sense to somebody, but it doesn't make sense to me and a lot of the people in the room tonight" - Ben Haslam.

Ben Haslam, the owner of IM1 Car Centre adjacent to the nurses' home development, isn't convinced the scheme was the best starting-point for the MDC: 

"I was put out, had to move premises, cost me a lot of money." - Andrew Malone.

Andrew Malone, who owns Quickfit Supercentre on Demesne Road, was asked whether he was convinced:

Millions of pounds of taxpayers' money goes towards Manx Development Corporation. 

Mr Harrop was asked whether government will ever see a return:
