'Power to the people' says MHK who helped secure freehold for Saddle Mews

Residents didn't feel they'd been getting value for money

A group of residents in the Island’s capital who were ‘empowered’ to come together to take ownership of their village should be an example to others.

That’s the view of a Douglas South MHK who has welcomed the sale of the freehold of the Saddle Mews complex.

It follows an approach from Four Seasons Home Care which had previously owned it.

It means management fees are now collected by the Saddle Mews Residents Association with residents now able to distribute the money to fund maintenance programmes.

Sarah Maltby drafted a Private Members Bill that will support leaseholders to buy their freeholds so they can manage their own properties.

She says despite it not being needed in this case it should help others in future:
