Dogs particularly susceptible

Pet owners, particularly those with dogs, are being warned about a potentially hazardous substance which has reportedly been washing up on some Island beaches.

What is thought to be lumps of solidified palm oil have been appearing, although the identity of the material has yet to be confirmed. 

Such lumps have been known to appear after being discharged from ships.

While palm oil is non-toxic to humans when pure, it can degrade or become rancid or contaminated at sea and may then pose a serious health risk if consumed.

Children should be kept away from such material, too.

Dogs seem to be particularly susceptible and there have been reports in the past of dogs dying after eating the substance.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture's warning has echoed one put out by the Strand Veterinary Practice.
