New role for crown dependencies MP

David Lidington visited Island last month

The politician tasked with managing the UK Government’s relationship with the Isle of Man has been moved to the Cabinet Office.

David Lidington visited the Isle of Man last month as part of his role supporting the crown dependencies.

Now, David Gauke succeeds him as Justice Secretary.

Mr Lidington has replaced disgraced Damian Green in the Cabinet Office, but has not been titled First Secretary - he will instead deputise for Theresa May during PMQs.

As a UK Treasury Minister, Mr Gauke helped negotiate the Island's new Common Purse Agreement.

That means Britain's financial contribution to the Island, after negotiations in the wake of historic VAT bombshells, will re-increase from £252m to £340m next year.

Mr Gauke is also well known to the Chief Minister, Howard Quayle.

During his time in the UK Treasury, he was heavily involved in overseeing anti-money laundering policy at the time of the 'Swiss Leaks' and subsequent Panama Papers.

However, this appointment continues a now-familiar theme - whereby, upon just getting used to one, another politician is introduced to the Isle of Man.
