New controls on scallop fishing

Daily and season catch limits in place

Catch limits and other controls are in place for today's start of the king scallop fishing season.

Last year saw a large number of vessels in Manx waters over the opening days with exceptionally high landings.

That led to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture imposing a temporary daily catch limit to ensure stocks were sustainable.

94 boats have licences for the next seven months to fish for king scallops within the Island's 12-mile limit.

DEFA Minister Geoffrey Boot says they will be keeping a close eye on how the season develops:-
