Murder trial enters fifth week

The murder trial of a Castletown man will resume at Douglas Courthouse today as it enters its fifth week.

Forty-six-year-old Ian Anderson denies murdering 60-year-old Neil Roberts from Ballabeg, in late 2013.

Witnesses finished giving evidence last week in front of a 12-person jury and Deemster Montgomerie.

Over the last four weeks the court has heard from a variety of people, from police officers first on the scene, Mr Anderson's son and latterly, psychological experts.

Jurors heard the 999 call made by Mr Anderson on the night of the alleged murder, as well as CCTV footage of both Mr Anderson and Mr Roberts drinking at a pub hours before the incident took place.

Mr Roberts's injuries were also described in detail by consultant pathologist William Lawler, who noted almost every bone on Mr Roberts's face was broken as well as some 23 fractured ribs.

This week the defence and prosecution lawyers are set to present their closing speeches, and Deemster Montgomerie will give his summary of the case.

The jury will then adjourn to consider the verdict.

The trial continues this morning at Douglas Courthouse, from 10am.
