MHK urges inclusion of 'commencement clause' in bill removing Bishop's vote

Chris Thomas says without, implementation may be out of Tynwald's hands

A Douglas Central MHK says he believes the Legislative Council will want to "minimise the risks" linked to removing the Bishop’s vote in Tynwald.

Earlier this week, LegCo voted to progress the bill to its final stage despite warnings from the Church of England that it may trigger the Diocese of Sodor and Man to be dissolved.

Chris Thomas points out the proposal did not appear in any election campaigns back in 2021, but believes there is a "strong argument" that only elected members should hold voting power.

However, he notes the Bill contains no 'commencement date', leaving the timing of any change open-ended:

Without a specified start date, the final decision on when the law takes effect may not rest solely with the Isle of Man.

The Legislative Council is set to debate the final stage on Tuesday. (11 November)
