Man who caused 'nasty injury' to police officer ordered to pay compensation

28-year-old told he 'simply can't behave in that manner'

A Ramsey man has been ordered to pay £750 in compensation after lashing out at a police officer and causing a ‘nasty injury’ to their finger.

Conor Odin Garaty, of Summerland, was arrested in the early hours of 3 October following an argument with his girlfriend.

During the arrest the 28-year-old was said to act ‘recklessly’ and began kicking out; PAVA incapacitant spray had to be used to subdue him.

Garaty later pleaded guilty to resisting a peace officer in execution of their duty and assaulting a police officer.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse his advocate told the court his client was ‘anxious’ around the police and normally ‘goes out of his way’ to avoid them.

“Mr Garaty does not minimise his actions and agrees things could have been handled differently,” he added.

Imposing a 12-month probation order Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told Garaty: “Matters seem to have escalated and got completely out of hand. You simply can’t behave in that manner.

“You could, and should, have responded in a different way to the police’s attendance,” she added.

Garaty must also pay £125 in prosecution costs.
