Man tries to get rid of cocaine and flee from police

28-year-old denies drug possession

A man's been fined after trying to flee police and throw away a wrap of cocaine.

Twenty-eight-year-old Darren James O'Hare of Close-y-Llergy in Union Mills appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He'd denied possessing cocaine and obstructing a drugs search on 31 May, but was convicted after a trial.

Prosecution advocate Barry Swain said staff at a bookies in Douglas contacted police after O'Hare was spotted acting suspiciously.

When officers arrived, O'Hare had left, but was soon spotted walking along Strand Street.

Police tried to detain him but he broke free and ran off, before being captured again on Regent Street as he tried to get rid of £80 worth of cocaine.

His advocate told the hearing O'Hare wasn't a regular drug user, but had bought the class A drug to have a party during TT.

He was fined £450 for the two offences and was also ordered to pay £500 in prosecution costs.
