Local authority pay revealed

Local authorities from across the Island have been revealing what their top officials are being paid.

Onchan MHK Pater Karran asked for salary figures from Infrastructure Minister David Cretney in a Tynwald question for written answer.

In his reply, Mr Cretney said his department doesn’t directly control local authorities and so had written to the various bodies asking for details.

The table of earnings shows, predictably, that the Island’s largest authority – Douglas – pays the most for its town clerk and chief executive at more than £100,000 a year.

By contrast, the much smaller Laxey and Michael commissioners paid their part-time chief executives between £20,000 and £40,000 per year.

Ramsey pays its top official between £80,000 and £100,000, while the equivalent post in Onchan, Peel and Port Erin pays between £60,000 and £80,000.
