Grant scheme could help more live independently

DOI consulting over support for home adaptations

More people could be helped to stay in their homes for longer under proposals put forward by the Department of Infrastructure.

A grant and loan scheme to give financial assistance to those with long-term health issues is currently out for consultation.

The House Improvement (Adaptations) Scheme 2018 would offer 50% of the cost of specialist equipment, or changes to a property, to allow people to continue living independently.

Based on clinical recommendation, the system would award funds of up to £30,000, rising as high as £50,000 in cases of exceptional need.

Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer says, although the scheme would be means tested, even those on higher incomes could be eligible for help.
