Non-policing matters on the rise for Island's constabulary

The Island's police force is set to adopt a new approach to dealing with people suffering mental ill-health.

Chief Constable Gary Roberts has begun a round of meetings with counterparts in the mental health service - so both organisations understand the pressures each faces. 

The move comes after the chief highlighted the growing number of non-policing matters his officers are called out to.

In his annual report last year, Gary Roberts said he lacked resources to deal with distressed people with mental health issues.

The new dialogue is expected to lead to new working practices.

The chief constable says there's been a big change in the demands on police:
