Douglas Mayor wants more young councillors

DCB hosts open day as part of Democracy Week

The Mayor of Douglas has called on young people to participate in local democracy and become council members.

Jon Joughin was speaking at an open day held in the Douglas Council chamber yesterday (3 Jul) as part of the inaugural ‘National Democracy Week’, a UK-led campaign to encourage citizens to be more active in the civic sphere.

Members of the public were invited to meet councillors and learn ‘what it takes’ to be a member of the Island’s largest local authority.

Mayor Joughin said the Council needs new ideas and is encouraging those who want ‘to give something back to their community and make a difference’ to come forward, either by standing in upcoming by-elections, or by simply attending meetings in the public gallery.
