DEFA monitoring the situation after BSE case in Ayrshire

 Chief Vet believes no cause for concern

Investigations are continuing in the west of Scotland into the origin of a new case of BSE - better known as Mad Cow Disease.

It's just the 5th case detected in Britain over the last 10 years. Tests are expected to take place over the coming weeks to pin down the source of the outbreak.

Currently in the Isle of Man BSE is a notifiable disease, meaning any suspected outbreak must be notified to DEFA's Animal Health department immediately.

The last reported case was in 1999.

The Manx Government's Chief vet, Dr Amy Beckett told Manx Radio they are keeping a close watch on the situation in Scotland, but she doesn't believe there's cause for concern.
