Campaigner urges Island to pilot recreational cannabis scheme

Charlotte Caldwell believes there is political support for a new approach to cannabis

A campaigner calling on the Isle of Man Government to pilot a scheme to allow the sale of recreational cannabis believes there is a political appetite for change.

Charlotte Caldwell's son Billy became the first patient in the UK to receive a medicinal cannabis prescription.

His case led to a change in law in the UK in 2018 after customs officials confiscated a cannabis-based medication, resulting in him suffering a life-threatening seizure.

She's been visiting the Island this week as part of the TRACD campaign, with a view to setting up a pilot scheme here.

TRACD calls for a tightly controlled adult-use pilot designed to inform government, reduce harm and displace illicit markets, while generating the evidence needed for modern policy.

Her visit comes as Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson prepares to bring a motion to Tynwald next month which could start the process towards legalising recreational cannabis.
