Busy year for Preservation of War Memorials Committee

Annual report to be presented to Tynwald

The Island's war memorials will be a topic of discussion for Tynwald later this month.

The Preservation of War Memorials Committee will present its annual report outlining its work.

The committee was set up in 2008 to identify and maintain the Island's commemorations to the war dead.

The committee chairman, Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson, stressed it's been a busy year because of the World War anniversaries being celebrated.

One of the main areas of work has been finding the families of those who died in service after World War Two and giving advice about putting their loved one's name on a memorial.

A database of more than 150 of the Island's memorials is now available thanks to its work with Manx National Heritage and the iMuseum.

And Archdeacon of Man Andrew Brown has been appointed to the committee to strengthen its links with Manx churches.

The report will be laid before Tynwald a week today (Tues 21).
