Backlash in Peel over telegraph pole decision

Planning refusal reversed following appeal

Despite planning initially being refused, a number of new telegraph poles could soon be installed in Peel.

Manx Telecom's plans, for eight new poles in Bellevue Park and Carmane Close and another in Cronk Rearyt, were rejected by the planning committee over their visual impact.

However, following an appeal, Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper has instructed the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture to reverse that decision.

That's despite an independent inspector recommending that both appeals should be dismissed.

Mr Hooper, who had been delegated responsibility for the decision by DEFA Minister Clare Barber, argues the proposal would not give rise to an unacceptable impact on the character and appearance of the area.

He believes the benefits outweigh the harms, especially considering government's National Telecommunications Strategy.

The decision has been heavily criticised by Glenfaba and Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan, who also says the move the appoint Mr Hooper is 'highly unusual'.

Mr Hooper and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture have been invited to respond.
