Chambers criticised over case handling

The Attorney General's Chambers has been accused of a 'cavalier attitude' towards civil liberties, after charges against a Castletown man for making nuisance phone calls was dropped.

The prosecution told Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes it would be offering no evidence against 36-year-old Jason Leo Brown, of Orry Place.

The charges, dating back to November, had been reviewed by a different prosecutor at the Attorney General's Chambers, who had decided not to pursue them.

This prompted Mr Brown's advocate, Ian Kermode, to criticise what he called the 'pass the parcel' system of case handling and make the comment about its attitude towards civil liberties.

Ms Hughes meanwhile, called for more consistency from the AG's Chambers.
