Advice for pet owners ahead of Storm Éowyn

*No bees were harmed

ManxSPCA says 'let’s keep our furry, feathered, and four-legged friends safe'

If you can - keep your pets indoors and avoid walks tomorrow.

That's the advice from the ManxSPCA as Storm Éowyn heads towards the Island.

It has issued guidance online for dogs, cats, birds, small pets and larger animals, including livestock.

Krysia Boruch is from the charity:

The charity has also issued the following advice online.

For dogs and cats:

  • Bring them indoors before the storm begins
  • Create a safe and quiet space with their favourite blankets, toys, and water
  • Check that your pet's ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case they get lost
  • There are plenty of mentally stimulating things to do in the home for an energetic pet, so please refrain from off lead walks
  • If you are choosing to go for a quick walk around the block (toilet break for those that don't have gardens), be seen, with Hi-Viz and contact tags on

For larger animals (Horses, Livestock):

  • Secure shelters or stables and remove hazards like loose debris that could cause injury.
  • Ensure fresh water is available if usual supplies are disrupted
  • Provide plenty of hay to keep them occupied if they must remain confined

For birds and small pets:

  • Move outdoor pets like rabbits and guinea pigs indoors to a safe, ventilated area
  • Cover cages with a blanket to reduce stress but allow airflow
  • Check that enclosures are sturdy and secure

General Tips:

  • Avoid walking dogs or letting pets roam outside during the storm—flying debris can be dangerous.
  • Stay calm—pets can pick up on your anxiety.
  • Pop the radio or TV on to distract pets from the noise outdoors.
