A Douglas man has been handed 10 penalty points after being caught in his car after smoking cannabis.

Police stopped Jordan Keig, of Reginald Mews, on Battery Pier in Douglas on 6 March – his VW Golf was stationary but the engine was running.

Officers could smell cannabis and a drug wipe test was carried out – Keig was arrested and a subsequent blood sample showed a reading of 3.3 micrograms; the legal limit is two.

At Douglas Courthouse this week the 24-year-old admitted being in charge of a vehicle whilst over the drug drive limit.

The court heard he’d smoked a joint before driving after splitting up with his girlfriend - his advocate told magistrates: "He fully accepts it was a silly thing to do."

Endorsing Keig’s licence, and fining him £500, magistrates described it as a ‘very unfortunate incident’ adding: “We accept it was a moment in time where you made a mistake.”

They also ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £125 telling him: “This really is a chance for you to never make a mistake like this again.

“We hope that you go forward and we never see you again.”
