Blinders' 100 percent record ends during derby defeat
Report by Mike Crook:
Port St Mary Legion returned to the top as the Blinders’ 100 per cent record in the Mann Crane Hire Snooker League came to an end, beaten by the Masters in a Cue Zone derby match.
Ivan McMaw 49-53 David Hill - Dave had the worst start imaginable in this one, 43-1 down but managing to produce a very solid recovery and eventually winning on the black after Ivan went in-off shooting a straight pot! Jez Hill 35-11 Harry Ellis - A frustrating evening for Harry as he couldn't get going, Jez pulling the win out of a very low scoring affair. Brendan Clague 65-54 Alex Kennedy - Alex looked up for this one, in control for the most part until a miscue while snookered on the last red saw him hit the black. The tide turned from there, Brendan pulling out some great pots. Tommy Clague 94-59 Scott Campion - Scott did okay, chipping away at a 56 deficit. Still 15 behind on the blue and in a snooker, Scott missed his attempted escape and couldn't manage to get the snooker required. Tommy did well to pot the blue and pink and finish the job. Les Briggs 106-71 Darryl Hill - Darryl, (21 break) looked to have an 84 chase in his sights until the last red when he missed a blue to the middle leaving him 20 behind with 27 on. Les took yellow and green to leave a snooker required. Les eventually floated in the pink to confirm the win.
Wannabes stay bottom, but it’s now two wins in a row. Dave Corris put the home team ahead before Steve Finnegan showed up with his best display of the season, breaks of 30 and 24 to level the score. The next two frames were shared, both black ballers. Peter Kirkham of the Mob was set a very stiff task in the decider, defending a 100 percent record and chasing what would have been a record if successful, opponent Paul McKinstry starting 112 ahead. It wasn’t to be, Kirkham managed the highest break of the week, 48, but Mckinstry held on, final score 70-130. Other frame scores: William Hogg 44-61 Dave Corris, Steve Finnegan 109-74 David Callister, Lee Hunt 73-64 Harry Minor and Jonny Hogg 69-72 Michael Creer.
James Goodwin 70-80 Nialls Wilson - Jimmy wasn't really at the races, giving too many fouls to aid Nialls’ 42 point chase. Having said that, there were only a few points in it when Niall potted a good blue, followed by a great pink. Now it was a black ball decider. After a few hits it was Niall that took the frame. Mark Quinn 53-87 Jamie Wilson - Jamie had his potting boots on and he had a little help from Mark. It was a break of 26 that made sure of the win. Tony Pring 61-29 Rob Cowin - Tony’s 28 start was the difference as both potted in equal measure, Rob admitting defeat on the blue. Alec Oates 53-19 Brandon Forrester - I have to say that I've seen Brandon play better, I potted some good reds but not many colours. By the time we reached the brown Brandon had had enough and shook my hand. Unfortunately, no game for Tony Cubbon, Hurricanes didn't have a fifth player, so frame and match to Malew.
Marc Morley 56-41 Matt Monks - Matt was one point ahead with four balls left, Marc got brown and blue but left the pink close to a pocket. Matt unluckily missed the thin pot leaving it in the jaws, frame to Marc. Phil Joynes 79-50 Dave Welsh - Phil got slightly ahead, but missing a cut to the middle left Dave in, he got two reds with blacks and was right back in it. Level at the colours, Phil doubled the yellow and using all his guile laid several nasty snookers on the green helping him to the win. Andrew Hutchison 39-53 Alex Sinclair - Alex started the better and was 22 ahead on the colours. Andy got the colours in one visit down to the pink and was unlucky not to get position on it, then left it over the middle for Alex. Dave Pickersgill 51-41 Kam Virk - Dave played well to peg Kam back to just eight points with three balls remaining. Dave got the blue and after short battle on the pink Dave went for a double, but tripled it plus good position on the black to pinch the frame. Terry Boyle 75-47 Lee Gale - With 28 start I picked off the odd red with a colour and played safe. Lee needed a snooker with reds remaining, then at the blue still trailed by 29. He got one good snooker and I hit the pink, the blue was pushed around the table for a while before I got a chance to pot it. It was an ugly frame and one I didn't enjoy winning but needs must! Great result for us but it could easily have been 4-1 the other way.
It was a good night all round for PSM, the Strollers ending a bad run, they hadn’t won for five weeks since winning a derby match against ‘The Legion’. Chris Lawless was the only successful Bar-barians player. Michael Curphey made breaks of 22 and 23, then Mike Boyle had a 32 and 21 in their respective wins. Boyle junior, Harry was the match winner in frame four, completing a hat-rick of Boyle clan wins in week seven. Frame scores: Neil Birchenough 41-64 Ian Brookfield, Chris Reynolds 56-91 Michael Curphey, Chris Lawless 69-30 Garey Ellison, Mark Davenport 48-76 Harry Boyle and Andy Moore 50-100 Mike Boyle.
Paul Smyth 39-74 Leon Martin - From 35 behind Smyth could win with the last colours. Martin had been relying on his solid safety game to hold on to the lead, but snuffed out any hope of a steal with a well taken 22 clearance. Dave Kelly 75-52 Paddy Delaney - Paddy made a couple of teen breaks to nearly draw level but let out a huge groan as he messed up a safety on the final blue. Even Kelly couldn’t miss the resultant blue, pink finish. Geoff Hall 25-55 John Spellman - Nothing went Spellman’s way early on, for example when playing safe to baulk and potting his nominated green ball. Hall was 20 up but once Spellman found his range he looked good. Needing the last three colours for a re-spot, Hall cannoned the black in and that was that. Stuart Sandford 66-15 Rodger Clague - One handicap cut hasn’t stopped Sandford, he was straight in with 25. Clague tried hard to contain him but left a red hanging, Stanford finishing off with another 22. Dan Crawley 85-63 Graham Ashton -A lovely 45 break from Crawley came to an end when hampered over a red. The frame and match looked done but Ashton hung in tenaciously as a tactical battle dragged out on the green, with the brown nearly covering the green pocket. Ashton thought there was room to sneak the green past, but he knocked the brown in. Crawley was left with a free ball, nominated the black but missed the pot and ended up snookering Ashton behind the black and a foul was called! Thankfully for him, Ashton and the snooker gods didn’t punish him.
A second match win for the Miscues, Ollie Pickford 87-58 Calum Gardner - Ollie Pickford put them ahead, successfully defending a 49 start despite a 30 break from Calum Gardner, score 87-58. Their other wins came from two new squad members, David Kelly and Dale Walker. Walker upsetting the form book, coming good at the fourth attempt and inflicting a first defeat on Pat Maher. Other scores: Luca McDermott 47-68 Vic Rigby, Dale Walker 56-30 Pat Maher, David Kelly 50-20 Simon Gardner and Ben Peach 51-55 Vinny Dale.
