Douglas Celts retain Manx Shield

Douglas Celts beat Southern Nomads 43-7 to retain their Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield title.

Against the run of play, Douglas led 12-0 at half-time with tries from Carl Conroy and Nathan Knights plus a conversion from Phil Plaatjes.

Early second half scores from Will Cain and Mike Osborn saw Douglas forge further ahead and as Nomads tired Owen Carvin, Shaun Garland and Conor McCaughen all crossed for tries to underline Douglas’ second-half dominance.

Gerard Landels picked up a late consolation for Nomads which was converted by Mark Young.

The win saw Douglas Celts complete a domestic rugby hat-trick, having already won the trophy and plate competitions.

Vagabonds' annus horrilbis finally ended at Ballafletcher with a ten-try home defeat by Wigan.

The result leaves Vagas one spot off the bottom of South Lancs/Cheshire Division Two, with fellow strugglers Oldershaw currently propping up the league with two fixtures yet to play.

Vagas at present will join Ramsey in Division Three next season, subject of course to the end-of-season league rearrangements which frequently occur at this level.

Ramsey ended their season on a high by beating league leaders Garstang 34-27 at the Mooragh in Lancs/Cheshire Three.

Ramsey led 26-22 at half-time with Dan Bonwick picking up two tries and scores from Henry Swithinbank and Harri Radford.

Garstang went ahead early in the second half but Radford’s second try, plus a Bonwick penalty retook the lead for Ramsey and gave them a maximum five points.
