Island side hoping to shake off back-to-back defeats

Report by Dave Christian:

According to the old saying “there’s no rest for the wicked”.

Somebody somewhere has assumed that Douglas Rugby Club must be wicked as they have their final fixture of 2025 this Saturday at the height of the party season and its away at Altrincham Kersal.

Douglas hit the dizzy heights of top of the Regional 2 North West standings just three weeks ago, however back-to-back defeats have seen them drop to fourth although they still have a game in hand.

Altrincham current lie in bottom spot and are winless after 12 matches.

Douglas beat them 62-13 at Port-e-Chee in the reverse fixture, however a closer look at results shows some impressive scorelines.

They lost by five against Vale of Lune, three against Widnes and held leaders Sandback to an 11-point win and they’ve registered 11 bonus points too, and, while it was last season, they beat Douglas as recently as January 2025.

There were no reported injury concerns from Port-e-Chee following last week’s defeat by Sandbach and everything will depend on availability within the squad.

Craig and Kyle Martin posed a constant threat to Sandbach last week and Douglas will want their raw pace if its available.

Matty Wood had another fine game at stand off and his partnership with scrum half Nathan Robson is pivotal for Douglas.

If they get all their big guns lined up, this should be a Douglas win and a neat end to 2025.
