Powerlifting: Island competitor scoops British championship gold

Victory for Alfie Bezance in Cardiff

One of the Isle of Man's powerlifters has secured victory during this year's British Classic Bench Press Championships.

Alfie Bezance claimed gold in the 105kg Sub-Junior Category with three successful lifts during the weekend event in Cardiff, Wales on 15-16 February.

His final bench press to secure the win came in at 165kg with his previous two including an opening total of 152.5kg before raising the challenge with his second lift at 160kg.

In the lead-up to this event, Bezance was one of two athletes along with Freya Weldon who obtained qualifying standards for the British Championship events at this year's Manx Powerlifting Winter Open Championships on 2 February.
