No plans for Sir Mark Cavendish statue

Education minister says such a tribute is not currently under consideration

There are currently no plans to commission a statue of Sir Mark Cavendish on the Isle of Man.

The chief minister Alfred Cannan has confirmed they're not looking at constructing such a tribute to the Manx Missile after he broke the record for most stage wins at the Tour de France in July this year.

However, Mr Cannan has reiterated that the department for education, sport & culture plans to rename the NSC raceway the 'Sir Mark Cavendish Raceway', and he's looking forward to seeing how these plans develop over the next few months.

An event to commemorate the cyclist's achievements took place at the NSC in August.

Earlier this month Cavendish attended Windsor Castle to receive his knighthood having been made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours list for 'his outstanding contribution to the sport of cycling, his on-Island and off-Island charity work and as a sporting ambassador for the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man.'
