Marie appointed Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Ambassador

Five-times British women's road race cycling champion Marie Morgan has been appointed as an Ambassador for the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association.

Formerly Marie Purvis, she was the first Briton to win a stage of the women's Tour de France.

She represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996.

She was leading the road race in Barcelona in the last few miles when a puncture put paid to her chances of victory.

She cycled for the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 and 1994 - she finished 4th in the road race in Canada.

Marie has also won British time trial titles over 10 and 25 miles.

In 1995 she broke the women's hour record at the Manchester Velodrome - a record which stood for 14 years.

Marie has also won gold at the 2001 Isle of Man Island Games in athletics in the half marathon.

Marie Morgan is the second leading sports figure to be appointed as a Team Isle of Man Ambassador - the first was coach, competitor and administrator Neil MacGregor.
