Hockey: Bacchas A snatch Mixed Cup during pulsating finals day

Castletown Cosney take Mixed Div 3 crown after epic title race

Three cup competitions and a thrilling league title race were decided during a pulsating cup finals day in mixed Manx hockey at the weekend.

Saturday (30 November) saw the 2024 Mixed Cup, Mixed Plate and Mixed Bowl finals held at the NSC with Bacchas A, Castletown Southerners and Harlequins B crowned winners of the respective competitions.

Meanwhile, Castletown Cosney claimed the Mixed Division Three league honours after beating title rivals Vikings E during a number of league contests held on the same day at QEII in Peel.

Saturday's matches marked the conclusion for much of the 2024 mixed hockey season on Island with only a handful of rearranged league matches still to be played.

The cup finals triple-header at the NSC on Saturday got underway in style as Castletown Southerners and Valkyrs C played out a 3-3 draw in regular time for the opening Mixed Plate Final.

It was then Southerners who struck the decisive blow to beat Valkyrs C 5-3 on penalty strokes.

After that, newly-crowned Mixed Premier League champions Bacchas A produced a stunning comeback to beat rivals Vikings A 4-3 in the Mixed Cup Final.

A late second-half turnaround from Bacchas A saw them overturn a 3-1 deficit to take victory in the closing stages with three quickfire goals.

Elsewhere, Harlequins B rounded off a flawless campaign to secure the third and final piece of silverware, the Mixed Bowl.

After a 100 per cent league record to win Mixed Division Two, 'Quins' held their nerve once more as they dispatched Valkyrs D 5-1 to guarantee a league and cup double.

Whilst the drama of the cup finals was held at the NSC, one final thrilling title race was being decided at QEII in Peel.

Three teams of Castletown Cosney, Vikings E and Bacchas D were all in mathematical contention to take top spot going into the weekend.

Castletown Cosney and Vikings E faced each other with the southern side coming out on top in a 3-2 thriller to secure the title as Bacchas D were held to a 1-1 draw later that afternoon.
