Eastern Titans go top in season opener
Report by Mick Hegarty:
A cracking start to this season’s IoM Handball Leagues , with Men’s and Mixed divisions being fought by three newly-formed regional handball clubs - Western Warriors, Eastern Titans and Northern Thunder.
Handball’s decision to operate their domestic competition programme in the summer months has certainly paid dividends attracting a plethora of sportsmen and women from netball, men’s and women’s rugby, football and badminton who have really taken a shine to handball as a way of keeping fit during their off-season.
In the Men’s Division, new boys, Western Warriors led by coach, Alex Cartney, gave a fright to the much more experienced Eastern Titans under the expert coaching of Matty McKeeman.
Titans held out for a 7-6 win but it augurs well for a tight fight for the title this season.
The mixed leagues saw Titans come out on top in both of their games and so top both divisions at this early stage
Golden Hand 2022 winner , Andy Burkitt of Titan’s top scored with eight but newcomer Fred Atherton of Western Warriors scored six on his handball league debut suggesting he’ll be giving Burkitt more than a run for his money this season.
