Government's reciprocal health efforts defended

A former Isle of Man health minister is dismissing suggestions the Manx government did little to save the Reciprocal Health Agreement.

After a strong campaign, including support from then Labour MP Andrew Mackinlay, the agreement was restored, meaning Island residents visiting the United Kingdom continue to receive free hospital treatment on the NHS, with a similar arrangement applying for people travelling in the opposite direction.

Eddie Teare, who is seeking re-election in Ayre in September's House of Keys general election, says a mix of public and political pressure forced the UK government's hand (listen to audio file below):

Mr Teare is one of three people who have so far indicated their intention to contest the single seat constituency of Ayre, the others being Liberal Vannin candidate Pat Ayres and Andrew Newington-Bridges.
