Vagabonds’ woes continue

Douglas avenged their away defeat at Widnes with a 27-3 victory over the same opponents at Port-e-Chee in South Lancashire/Cheshire Division One.

However, the boggy conditions took the gloss off their game and left them without a bonus point fourth try.

Carl Markl-Ferns bagged the only try of the first half and, with Bryn Snellgrove’s conversion and two penalties, they eked out a 13-3 half-time lead.

Widnes skipper Kevin Leadbetter kicked a penalty for his side’s only points.

In the second half, Markl-Ferns grabbed his second of the game and Luke Hyland also crossed for Douglas to make the game safe, with Snellgrove converting both.

Vagabonds lost 34-3 at home to Marple in Division Two to continue a miserable run of results which has left them winless since October 8 and balanced precariously just outside the relegation zone.

Aidan O’Shea kicked Vagas’ only points of the afternoon with a penalty.

The good news for Vagas is that their rivals at the foot of the table all lost which means they remain five points clear of the drop zone.

In Division Three, league leaders Aspull became the only side to have won at the Mooragh Park this season as they cruised to a 48-0 victory over Ramsey.

Aidan Clark, and Liam West (two) went over for first half tries and a solitary conversion from skipper Sam Kindred gave the Wiganers a 17-0 lead at the interval.

In the second half, Mike Webb crossed for Aspull early on to secure the bonus point before Messrs Clark and West struck again, Clark for his second and West to complete his hat-trick.

Johnny Linekar finished the day off with a late score.
