Cycling: Fred Kelly Road Race returns for 2024

Competitors to take on Jurby circuit and hill climb on Sunday (21 July)

One of the longest-established cycling events on the Isle of Man returns for 2024 this weekend.

The Fred Kelly Road Race takes place on Sunday (21 July) involving a largely flat loop course through the Jurby area before ending with a hill-climb finish up Tholt-y-Will towards Sulby reservoir.

Starting with a neutralised roll out to the circuit section of the race, competitors will then take on a 6km loop in Jurby on Ballamenagh Road, a section of the Coast Road, Ballavarran Road and Sandygate Road.

The second and final phase will involve an ascent up Sulby Glen Road to the finish by the Sulby reservoir car park.

Niall Quiggin - Director and Treasurer of the event's organisers, Manx Viking Wheelers Club - says the layout this year has changed slightly again for this year and the profile could be more welcoming to those new to the sport.

What's more, he thinks the difference of a hill finish as opposed to a bunch sprint adds a new element to the racing competition:
