Cavendish completes Giro d'Italia

Mark Cavendish came 36th in yesterday's final stage of the Giro d'Italia, a time trial, and with it completed the first major tour of his career.

The 23-year-old won two stages, becoming the first Briton to do so at the Giro, and also claimed two second places during the three week event.

He could have won another one, but eased up on the line to give his High Road team-mate Andre Greipel a win on stage 17.

Cavendish only finished 132nd overall but in the points section, his specialist area, he was the highest placed non-Italian, coming joint fourth with Tuscany's Paolo Bettini.

As well as the stage wins, finishing the tour is an achievement in itself for the Laxey rider as he has become the first Manx rider to ever complete one of cycling's three major national tours; France, Spain and Italy.
