Development officer says different courses and schemes have been brought in
Work is ongoing in the Isle of Man's athletics scene to boost volunteer and coaching numbers, according to the Island's athletics development officer.
Commonwealth Games competitor, Ollie Lockley took up the post in 2023 with some his main responsibilities including getting more people to take up voluntary positions to help athletes and run events.
During his time in the role, a number of initiatives have been introduced including coaching courses for numerous disciplines and awards schemes for those who assist at meetings in positions as marshals, timekeepers and more.
Looking forward, Lockley says not just getting people into the sport but also getting them to stay in any capacity is very important for the future:
When it comes to the competitive side of things, Lockley adds whilst events such as road running and race walking are seeing strong participation levels, it's expected certain field events will 'need work.'
This can include more specialised disciplines such as the high jump, long jump and pole vault as well as throwing events such as the hammer throw.
In this regard, Lockley says there are plans next year to bring over England Athletics coaches to help Island-based teachers and tutors develop skills to help with throwing events.
Anyone interested in getting involved in coaching and volunteering roles is invited to get in touch with Isle of Man Athletics for more details.
