Athletics: Corrin narrowly misses out on European championship medal

Manx athlete equals personal best during strong performance in Slovakia

Isle of Man athletics competitor Regan Corrin has narrowly missed out on claiming a medal in international competition over the weekend.

Taking part in the European Athletics Under-18 Championships in Banksa Bystrica in Slovakia from 18-21 July Corrin went on to finish fourth in the men's high jump event with a best clearance of 2.05 metres.

Only the eventual top three managed better at 2.08 metres with Sweden's Svante Svensson claiming gold whilst silver and bronze went to Antoine Antczak of France and Vuj Solaja of Serbia respectively.

After failing his opening jump of the event at 1.98 metres, Corrin then successfully beat that and every other height up to 2.05 metres as he remained in contention for bronze throughout the tournament.

He would hold onto a top-three spot until Solaja's very last attempt where the Serb managed to clear the 2.08-metre mark and push the Manx athlete out of the medal placings.

Whilst it means he missed out on a podium, 2.05 metres equals Corrin's personal best in the high jump which he set at the Isle of Man Track & Field Championships two weeks ago.

This latest benchmark adds to a twelve months in which he's claimed high jump gold at the 2023 Island Games in Guernsey and the England Under-17 high jump title in Birmingham a month later in August last year.
