Youth centre set back

Plans for a youth and community centre on land near the Heron pub in Anagh Coar have received a set back.

The proposed site is owned by Douglas Corporation, whose Public Works Committee has voted against the application, on the grounds of inadequate parking and a perceived adverse impact on the provision of open space in the area.

The application is in the name of South Douglas MHK Bill Malarkey and his wife Carol, who is a member of the town council.

Councillor Ritchie McNicholl (pictured), whose committee considered the scheme, is surprised the Malarkeys didn't consult more fully with the Town Hall before submitting the scheme.

His personal view is that the proposed location is 'too central', and too close to Corporation houses and the Heron pub (audio file attached):

The Public Works Committee decision to oppose the application for a youth and community centre will be looked at by the full council at Wednesday's monthly meeting.

The application, for approval in principle, hasn't yet been considered by the government's Planning Committee.
