Yellow warning update for severe gales later

Castletown Promenade closed due to overtopping

Ronaldsway Met Office has issued a yellow warning for further severe gales through this evening and overnight.

The westerly wind will bring regular gusts of 60 to 65mph with isolated gusts up to 70mph for a 12 hour period from 6pm.

This brings a risk of disruption to travel as well as the potential for damage.

Castletown Promenade has closed due to coastal overtopping ahead of the high tide this lunchtime (12.05pm).

A team is also currently in Laxey clearing up after a significant amount of shore stone was brought up by the tide along the length of the promenade, leaving the footpath unsuitable for use.  

There's a yellow warning in operation until 2pm with other areas likely to affected such as Fenella Beach, the northeast end of Peel Promenade and to a lesser extent the eastern end of Shore Road, Rushen.

There's a small risk of minor flooding in low-lying harbour areas at high tide - the Tongue in Douglas and

West Quay in Ramsey are the two areas mentioned.
