Work permit legislation currently in place is sufficient to protect the rights of Isle of Man people.
That's the belief of Economic Development Minister John Shimmin in response to a Tynwald question this afternoon (21 Jan).
He said it was the Control of Employment Act 1975 which was referred to, and meant if a job was advertised and a suitable Manx worker applied they were given priority.
Mr Shimmin said simply being resident on the Island gave no special entitlement, and he was satisfied this was robust enough.
He also commented on the problem of getting some people to apply for jobs, particularly in the middle age group:
